Momo are among one of the ancient Tibetan recipe. Also they are considered to be the unofficial national dish of this region. These are those recipes which one could be taking in breakfast, lunch or dinner. They are light weighted and could easily be digested. Generally momo are steamed before they could be served. You can also do the inner fillings with minced meat or vegetables. Both will be best suited for the filling up your momo.
They are shaped like a bite sized, and one could enjoy them with having a conversation with your family members and friends. To make this recipe more delicious, you could serve them with spicy tomato or chili sauce.
When you are having plenty of time, and then go for making the momo. As this recipe needs a lot of time management in its making process. It’s better to have a helping hand; this can cut up your time for making the momo. Otherwise it would take you around up to 2 hours in shaping them. Also the time depends on the working speed and the appliances you are using for steaming and making up your momo. The key ingredients that is needed to make a delicious momo are as follows:
- Refined flour, 1 cup
- 2 tablespoon of oil
- Spring onions, chopped finely
- Finely chopped ginger
- Finely chopped green chili
- French beans, finely chopped
- Carrot finely chopped
- Bean sprout
- Salt as per taste
- Light soy sauce
- Corn flour
- Sesame oil
- Chopped capsicum
- Garlic finely chopped
Crafting the right shape for the momo, could be a real task. Let’s roll down with some steps that would provide you for easy makings to your momo. The step to make momo is following:
1 – Take a bowl, add up with refined flour, oil and salt and mix it completely. Add water in the bowl and knead to make firm dough. Cover the dough with a moist cloth and set it aside for at least half an hour. Be sure that you should knead the dough until it becomes smooth and it does not stick around your figures.
2 – Chopped down all the vegetables that were collected by you. You can also use a food processor to chop the vegetables. Heat up the oil in the pan and add chopped garlic and leave it to be saute for up to 3 minutes.
3 – Now add the chopped onions into the pan and sauté it with garlic for 15 seconds. Now add the chopped vegetables in to the pan, increase the flame and stir fry the vegetables.
4 – When the edges start gaining the golden color, add up with soya sauce, pepper and salt in to the pan. Keep the ingredients to stir fry on a high flame, until the vegetables are completely cooked. Cooking of vegetables might take up to 10 minutes on high flame.
5 – After the vegetables are completely cooked, add the chopped green onions, and toss it with the vegetables for a minute. Check on the taste of your fillings, and add salt and pepper if needed as according to your taste. It’s better to keep your fillings inside the refrigerator and allow it to cool for at least an hour, unless your dough is ready and shaped up for the fillings.
6 – The dough is to be divided into two parts. Now stretch each of the parts up to 7 inches long and then cut them into smaller and equal slices. Make a small ball with each of the equally cut slices and a covering of moist napkins should be done.
7 – Take each dough ball on a light board, dusted over with refined flour upon it. Now roll the dough balls into a small and thin circle of having a diameter about 3 inches. Try to roll the center thick and the corners thinner, so that you can closed your momo with your fillings easily.
8 – Place the right amount of vegetable stuffing in the center of the dough. Now lift one side of the dough edge and start pleating. Start folding and forming of the pleats towards the end and join them at the center. Prepare all the slices you want to make and place them under the moist napkins until you are ready to steam them.
9 – Now talking about the suitable vessel for steaming up your momo, the best you can use from, pressure cooker, a steamer or electric cooker. Choose among them and boil the water. Be careful while steaming up your momo in the pressure cooker; do not allow them to touch each other. Steam the momo for 5 to 10 minutes. This time could vary depending upon the flame and the vessel being used for steaming the momo.
10 – Avoid over steaming the momo, as it could result in getting them dried up and dense. The best way for letting you know that your momos are ready, touch them and if they do not feel sticky and the outer covering will become transparent. Your momo are ready, garnish them with some green onions for taste.
11 – Serve the momo with spicy tomato sauce or shcezwan sauce as momo goes very well with spicy sauce. Serve them when they are still hot.
Note: Momo could be very juicy too taste, so be careful while you bite a hot momo, the hot liquid inside them could burn up your mouth.
